Should we be doing multiple jobs?

A job decides a lot of traits of your personality therefore choosing your profession is really important but have you ever wondered why people devote most of their time doing one job and what about the other hidden qualities or talents in you? In this blog we will talk further about how your personality is dependent on the type of job you do and , how we are forced to choose one profession and hide our other versions.

A person’s nature, his decisions is much decided by the type of job he/she does like, a primary school teacher treats even adults as kids  and thinks they too who needs to be guided in every action .How a psychotherapist is bound to listen to people’s talks deeply and analyze there mental state all the time even in normal conversations. There is a mention in the book Atomic Habits that your overall personality comprising of your decisions and thinking is a by-product of the actions happened to you in the past or present which proves the point that work and environment do take a part in building a personality.

So, it's really important to choose the field you wat to give major part of your time. You can ask yourself what would have I done if I got different oppurtunities and then analise if that is the version you like the most.

But, why can’t our personality be built of different traits taken from different works. In other words, why can’t we perform different jobs when as a matter of study this is what we always wanted. Remember when we were kids and were always confused in choosing one career option. Sometimes we wanted to be astronauts fascinated by the stars and wanting to visit them, sometimes wanting to be a singer ,sing like we did in bathroom or other times wanting to be a chef when we helped our moms in kitchen one day. From childhood we have been interested in doing many things and discover different fields. Each field you explore opens up a new version of yourself which was always present inside you but got suppressed as we were told to perform one job. There can be so many ways to elude happiness in every field but, only as an adult you are told to compromise with one job!

In a capitalist world, to run a factory( to manufacture even a pin) there were needed workers and also coordination between workers. To establish coordination it was decided that one worker would for example mine steel for pins, other would melt it, another worker would give the shape to pin and yet another person would be packing it to sell. Here each person is associated with one task to enhance the working of a factory(a society is a factory at large). This kills the possibility of one person to perform more tasks and explore his other versions. Hence, capitalism is a reason why people choose to do one job only.

This theory of killing different versions of you which could have lived can be seen in Tamasha movie too(this gives yet another perspective to watch the movie). When the protagonist Ved who was always fascinated by stories and drama developed a different person inside him which was trapped in him until he left his job and finally met his fate. Maybe it was the feeling of performing different roles(as we do in a drama) in Ved which pushed him towards drama(don in one scene, mimicrying another actor in other scene and telling yet another peeing story in other scene).

The same applies to relationships according to the author of “The school of Life” book. That a person should develop different relations to explore different versions of them and each different person teaches different qualities. This thought was someway reflected in Dear Zindagi movie too, where Shah Rukh Khan advices us to be in different relationships to understand the type of people when he gives the example of buying a furniture.
