Atomic Habits
Author James Clear says in his book Atomic Habits that environment plays a major role in building habits, more than any motivation.
The author feels that motivation is fake and that the
surroundings affect our habits and our overall personalities.
A woman wanted to change the eating habits of his
employees which she did by changing the structure of their canteen. She filled
fridge doors with water bottles instead of soda cans. Placed water filters in
five different corners of the canteen and made soda difficult to reach.
people found it difficult to reach for soda cans and were shifted to drinking water instead. She was able to change their habits without even saying a word of motivation to them.
So try and
assign different tasks to different places.
For example if you want to make a habit of reading
then you can keep your books in sight, beside your bed in order to read before
sleep.
The author was
able to create a separation between his professional work and personal life by
assigning office work in a separate room. He knew that when he steps out of the
room, he has to give time to his family and that's how his mind got used to work in the office room.
The author says we have different personalities
existing in us which are dependent on the surroundings.
Some people drink alcohol because he is lonely while
others drink it when they are in a party. The sound of glass, the sight of your
friends when they drink and the sound in the bar are possibly the cues trigger
the feeling of drinking.
